| Of the many things that have changed over the last 50 years the entertainment industry has sustained the biggest change of all. This includes music, movies, Television, and the more recent invention, the video game. All of these forms of Entertainment have endured a long streak of criticism ever since each was formed. Music has gone along ways from Elvis to Marilyn Manson. Back in the day Elvis was considered racy for the time. Gyrating his hips were too much for the American populace, but this censorship was a contributing factor to his popularity. It drew attention to this new American Icon which drove fans to him in droves, the music has considerably changed since then. One of the most controversial songs that came about in the early 90's was Cop killer by the band Body Count, which was co-written by Ice-T. This song had started a debate about freedom of speech. The ones against the song say that it is a misuse of the first amendment. While others say that this type of song has been out there before, most notably Eric Clapton’s cover version of Bob Marley’s " I shot the Sheriff. Which hit the top of music charts during the mid- 70's. Many people believe this to be race related. since the band Body Count consisted of mostly African American members. In past years, Marilyn Manson has been the target of the news media attacks. Marilyn Manson, Which is his stage name formed from linking an Iconic female sex symbol and the name of a iconic mass murderer, IN case you couldn’t figure that out its Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. The band is considered shock rock, for its mix of heavy metal and industrial music. as saying that it contributes to teenage violence. It was said that The columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were fans of the band, but it was later found out that they never were. The media was then criticized for using the band as a scapegoat instead of analyzing the underlying societal problems surrounding the incident. Clip of Marilyn Manson Censorship in movies have been around for a long time. From 1930 when it was originated until the late 60's, The Hollywood production code controlled all aspects of what was put on the screen. With the long list of rules showing what was permissible to show. This code spelled out what was morally acceptable in the production of motion pictures for a public audience. There were three general guidelines that you would have to stay within. 1.NO picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. This pretty much means that the audience should never feel sympathetic toward the side that encourages sin. 2. Correct standards of life, subject only to the requirement of drama and entertainment, shall be presented. And number 3 Law, natural or human, shall not be ridiculed, nor shall sympathy be created for its violation. Many of the Particular applications that pertained to these principles that were to give Specific restrictions dealt with many different subject matters. Nudity and suggestive dance, Vulgarity, the depiction of illegal drugs and liquor( when not required by the plot), sexual perversion such as homosexuality and venereal diseases and also were the depictions of childbirth, Murder scenes had to be shot in a specific way so that it would not generate imitations in real life. And there was to be no excessive and lustful kissing. This was carried out until the late sixties when the code was revised. At this time the production code was way behind in the times and an aggressive campaign led by the Hollywood industry was created to make films relevant again for a society whose attitudes and practices no longer coincided with the morality institutionalized in the production code. Another factor that led to the codes revisions were the new G-M-R-X classification scheme. Now movies could show certain things that would coincide with the certain classification grades. This led to a new shift toward movies that were called ultra violent. With the code revised, It merely stated that film makers were to use discretion in showing the taking of a life. This allowed the movie Bonnie and Clyde which was one of the first explicitly violent film, to be made. This movie was about two bank robbers who roamed the central united states during the depression, This movie was one of the first to use squibs. These were small devises that were used to simulate a bullet impact. These were used to raise the violence level in movies and make it more believable. The Category of Ultraviolence also includes the use of bodily mutilation, such as eye gouging, impalements, and dismemberment which surfaced in horror films in the late 70's and the 80's. during this time the perfection of special effects came around and made it possible to show maiming and dismemberment in extraordinary detail. These types of movies that used these types of violence include Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm street. These were considered Slasher films, which were about serial killers, killing promiscuous teenagers. These movies have been criticized by feminist groups by saying that usually in these movies the premise was a male killer stalking and slaughtering female victims. This kind of graphic violence can often be seen in today’s movies . It is now considered normal. It is expected of the movies trying to draw in a young crowd will throw in violent images to catch their eye. Movies such as the Saw series, the Devils Rejects, and Resident Evil. These all show very violent images. To audience: Now I would like to ask all of you a question. Have you heard of the movies Psycho or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre or silence of the lambs? Whatever the crowd does How many of you know who Ed Gein is? -whatever the crowds response is Well Ed gein was the inspiration for the main villain of these movies. Ed Gein was a notorious serial murderer, although it was never known if he ever killed more than two people. It was what he did with the dead victims that made him notorious. Even though he only killed a couple people he admitted to digging up fresh graves of woman he thought looked like his mother. Ed Gein was never found guilty with any of the murders since he was pronounced mentally incompetent. In Psycho Norman Bates had an unhealthy psychopathic obsession with his mother, Much as Gein did , his mothers death caused him to go insane. IN Chainsaw massacre leather face used the facial skin of his victims to make masks, as did Gein. Also in the Silence of the Lambs, Buffalo Bill would kill woman for the skin to make a woman suit to exercise his transvestite side, as did Gein. This was a case of Real life events that cause movie violence that some say is the cause of real violence all over again, it is one continuous circle. Now we are going to show a couple of violent clips from three different movies, the first two are movies inspired by Ed gein, Psycho and Silence of the lambs. In the first clip, The detective played by Martin balsam, enters the Bates’ residence hoping to find any type of evidence of the missing Marion Crane, He is attacked by Normans "Mother" and falls down the stairs even though it looks more like he’s tap dancing down the stairs. The next clip is from silence of the lambs, This is Hannibal lector’s escape scene, he un locks his handcuffs using the sharp edge of a pen that he regurgitated prior to the guards entering his cell. Here we see how violent he actually is, up to this point in the movie, he has only been seen behind glass with a very mellow air to him. This last clip is from Halloween, The character we see is Annie, she returned to the house looking for her keys after going out to her car only to find it locked. This is the second murder in the movie that we see after the murder of his sister. Television plays a significant role on the daily lives of people here in America. Nearly 98% of all American households own at least one television. In America more people own televisions than they do Telephones. It is estimated that an American watches 7 hours of television a day. It is clear to see that Americans devote a significant time of their free time to watching television. And it is no wonder that some people blame the Tv for the violence that they see on the street. There has always been a concern about the violence that has been on television. In the early Sixties westerns began to decline in popularity and crime dramas such as Dragnet began to control the waves. These shows began to escalate in popularity into the 70's, they included Kojac, Charlie’s Angels, and Hawaii Five-0. These shows offered the same type of premise. Solving crimes and catching the bad guys, these types of shows experienced the same type of dilemma as movies did. Audiences got bored of the same old violence that they saw countless times before, To acquire more viewers the violence had to be raised to keep the people entertained. Today’s television contains many new shows that incorporate violence in every episode. A show such as C.S.I. which shows crime scenes and the bodies of victims with a large amount of detail, through the show they recreate the acts of murders that are violent in itself. We believe that violent images on television would not cause grown adults to become more violent, but we do believe that younger children watching violent images could cause a more substantial effect. If any of you have already had effective citizenship with Mr. Mangini you would probably have already seen this already, This is a portion of the show, dateline, It is a section of the Schools Under Siege episode , it shows how kids often respond to different types of television shows. Video Games are relevantly newer to the past three categories. The popularity of video games have steadily risen since 1984. Video games have been the subject of frequent controversies due to its depictions of graphic violence, sexual themes, and racism. In 1976 one of the first controversial video games came out which was entitled Death race. This game allowed players to drive around in a car, in order to run down "gremlins" Many critics though inferred that the game actually simulated vehicular homicide, this was particularly so considering that the games original title was Pedestrian. Video games came under further criticism after the columbine school shootings, The shooters were known players of first person shoot-em up games such as Doom and Wolfenstein 3d, these were said to have played a causative role in the massacre. Many new games really don’t have much of a plot besides shooting anything around you that moved. One of the games such as this is Dead Rising a new game only available on Xbox 360, the only objective to the game pretty much is to run around a deserted mall killing zombies that for no particular reason are swarming toward the mall. |
